Social media has become an essential tool for businesses to connect with customers and build their brand. With over 70% of the population in Hungary being active social media users, these platforms offer huge potential for business growth. But which social media platform should you choose? The answer is not easy, as different platforms have different audiences, features and capabilities. Here is a detailed overview of the most popular platforms to help you make an informed decision. We will analyse, among other things, user data, advertising opportunities and the strengths of each social media platform to help you find the most effective solution for your business.

The variety of social media platforms can be bewildering. Now and then a promising-looking channel comes knocking, and months or years later we find out if it was as big a splash as the professional audience thought it was. Read about social media trends in our article below.

According to DataReportal, the most popular social media platform in Hungary is YouTube with 7.29 million users. This is followed by Facebook with 5.35 million people registered, and then TikTok with 3.24 million people, which means that the latter platform can reach 30% of the people who are eligible to register. In fourth place is Instagram with 2.7 million users, followed by Pinterest with 2.09 million users, Linkedin with 1.6 million registrations and X with 1.46 million users.

Let's find out more about these platforms and when to use them.

The most popular social media platforms

YouTube - Empire of Videos

If you're looking for video content for business, YouTube is the perfect choice. With over 7 million users in Hungary, it's a great way to reach a huge potential audience. Besides video ads, you can also increase your visibility with sponsored content and product launches.

However, it is important to keep YouTube's search engine optimisation factors in mind to ensure that our videos reach as many people as possible. Well-chosen titles, descriptions and keywords can make a big difference to organic impressions. Remember, YouTube is also the second largest search engine after Google!

Facebook - The citadel of personal connections

Facebook is arguably one of the most popular social media platforms in our country. It has over 5 million users, which is more than half of the total Hungarian population. Although many believe that the heyday of Facebook is in its decline, it is still indispensable for business presence.

The advantage of the platform is that we can reach almost all age groups, young and old. Facebook offers a rich set of targeting options to customise your ads, so you can target exactly the audience you want. The downside is that organic reach has declined significantly in recent years, making it difficult to succeed without paid advertising.

TikTok - The youthful impulse

TikTok has burst onto the scene in recent years and now boasts nearly 3 million Hungarian users. Although many people still see it as a platform for teenagers, more and more people in their 30s and 40s are discovering it for themselves.

TikTok is a great platform for creative, unique video content. It's great for branding and awareness-raising, as users love entertaining, engaging videos. By engaging with our business profile in current challenges, we can significantly increase reach and engagement. There is plenty of potential in terms of ad reach, with a 22.6% increase in reach in a single year between 2023 and 2024.

Instagram - Aesthetics and visuals

Instagram has 2.7 million users in our country, the majority of which are women (56.6%). It is the perfect platform to present your products or services visually. Sophisticated photos and creative imagery are essential for business success.

Instagram is constantly adding new features to help businesses. In addition to traditional images, it is also worth working with video content, Reel videos, and IGTV posts. Users love stories and a behind-the-scenes look. And from an advertising point of view, the cross-promotional possibilities of Instagram and Facebook can be very effective. Plus, in the past year, potential ad reach has increased by 8%, which is great news for businesses.

Pinterest - A hotbed of ideas

Although Pinterest has a user base of 2.09 million, 23.7% of those who sign up use the platform. It is mainly women who are looking for creative ideas and inspiration on a wide range of topics.

If our products and services fit well into the categories that are popular on Pinterest, it's worth using visual content. Search engine optimisation is important, using relevant keywords so that an audience receptive to your ideas can find you. In addition, Pinterest is generally much less competitive from an advertising point of view, so you can achieve outstanding results.

LinkedIn - Professional networking

Although LinkedIn has a more modest user base in this country (1.6 million), it is a great social media platform and is extremely useful from a B2B perspective, as it typically hosts business leaders, decision-makers and professionals. It is an excellent platform to build your brand and share professional content.

On LinkedIn, it's easy to build valuable relationships and acquire new business partners. The advertising system is highly targetable, so you can reach people in the industries that matter to you. Not to mention that reach has increased by more than 14% in just one year. It's also a great platform for recruitment, as job seekers are keen to browse the opportunities here.

X - the former Twitter

The platform, known by its maiden name Twitter, had 1.46 million users in Hungary at the beginning of 2024, representing 16.6% of all those eligible to register. It is a platform for opinion leaders to express themselves in concise and to-the-point messages. It is a platform particularly suitable for networking, offering a wide range of features and opportunities.

Decision criteria for choosing the right platform

When choosing a social media platform, the first and most important step is to understand your business and marketing objectives. What do we want to achieve? Increase our visibility, sell products or services directly, or build a community around our brand. Based on our goals, it's easier to determine which platforms best fit our strategy.

It is also essential to know exactly who your target audience is. What are their demographics, what content do they like to consume and, most importantly, which social media platforms are they active on? Outlining your ideal customer profile will help you find the platforms where you are most likely to reach your potential customers.

And don't forget to map your competitors' activities! Find out which social media channels they are on, what type of content they share and how successful their communications are. This can provide us with useful information, but it's also important to find ways to stand out with a unique voice and value-added content.

Let's also assess our available resources! How much time and energy can we devote to our social media activity? Do we have the human resources and expertise to produce content and manage our platforms? It is also important to take costs into account, whether it is paid advertising or outsourcing.
